The Story

We are proud to introduce to you the Baseline High-Tops! Our most eco-friendly garment to date. Made from over 70% recycled materials.

Our Inspiration

Inspired by a pair of original basketball High-Tops spotted in an archived article over a year ago, which lit the fuse for us to set to work on our first pair of sneakers. We trawled through libraries of images to find photos of these iconic pieces, often seen on basketball courts and tracks worldwide as genuine sports footwear.

The Details

To look forward, we had to look back. We researched the original boots, the shape, curvature and finish and developed a modern-day version. From the tan rubber soles and toe cap to the jug loop on the back, finished in vintage red, these boots carry all of the heritage hallmarks you’d expect to see from an original 50’s sports boot.

Sustainability at the core

We wanted to create something unique, unlike anything else on the market, which would page homage to the originals with a modern twist and the &SONS DNA. The result is a meticulous mix of traditional fabrics, including raw canvas and cork and, of course, our famous recycled rubber sole - all with high environmental credentials. Our Ecolive Canvas mix is 70% recycled cotton 30% Viscosse, all from certified renewable sources.
Paying further homage to the originals, we have used 100% recycled cork on the in-soles and outer badge, which featured on the boots of this era. The cork application, hand-distressed canvas and tan accents deliver an authentic aesthetic and look aged straight out of the box.

Please Note - Each shoe is hand finished and distressed so please expect variation from pair to pair. Our supplier takes care to match each pair by eye to ensure the distress level is matched across the shoes.

Origins

Rubber-soled canvas shoot marked a significant moment in the history of athletic shoes and dated back to the early 1920s. Coined as a ‘non-skid’ athletic sneaker, the High-Top was the only ‘All-American’ basketball shoe of its time.

As technology moved on, the High-Top was surpassed by more advanced trainers that offered better performance and support through the years. As it was retired from the courts, the humble High-Top made its way onto the high-street and the feet of the next generation.

Through the 50s, 60s and 70s the High-Top trainer was more likely to be found on musicians, actors and artists than it was on the baseline of a court. But with it's iconic status and distinct design, it has stood the test of time and looks as good today as it did over 100 years ago.
